Thank You, Disney.

Reading all these feminist texts, not to mention listing daily instances of patriarchy has really made me take notice all the implications of gender in society. I knew it existed, but never really thought about how deeply ingrained it is within society. I've begun to notice it more than anything in the media. As "modern" as we are in the western world, there are still many, many gender stereotypes and stigmas all over the place.

Lately, I've noticed every commercial for cleaning products or food preparation is targeted at middle-aged women with children while every car commercial or fast food chain is highly masculinized.

Then there's the TV shows themselves, movies, magazines (both men and women's seem to be equally exploitative), music (rap, obviously) and the list goes on. So if anyone thought before this class that sexism and gender politics didn't have a impact on daily life, then you may have never turned on a TV, read a magazine, a book, or turned on a computer.

As were learning to talk and walk, and tie our shoes just barely beginning to learn the ways of the world and we were left unattended by our parents under the watchful eye of our favorite Disney movie. These movies made us believe the world was a happy place where animals talk and genies and fairy godmothers exist, you can learn to fly all the while singing in tune, we were being molded and influenced by the ideas of gender.

If you grew up on Disney movies like I did, you can probably relate to this.

This one's just for fun:

Guide to Finding a Man according to--no not Cosmo, Disney.

Disney has ultimately taught us the ways of life. to find a prince "pretend you don't care that he's a prince", "Act scared of him" ,"befriend animals" "trust EVERYONE" , "pretend like your dead" and most importantly "Save your first kiss in case of an emergency".

To sum up,

if you can’t sing, are a bad sewer, or hate animals, you may die alone.

  1. So first of all, I enjoyed the videos you posted. The second one in particular I found incredibly funny, mostly because I recognize that I still fall prey to this. Watching it I realized all the gross similarities between Disney movies that objectify women and give young girls unrealistic perceptions of the future. However, it is pathetic to admit that there is still a part of me that loves Disney movies....I can't help it (and I have a 10 year old sister so it's easy to blame it on her!) The video was interesting to me for a second reason though too, namely, the song choice.

The first song, "I want you to want me" is obviously a well-known song, however, the version of the song that was used is the same one from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You (which is a movie I mentioned in an earlier post and one that most of us are probably familiar with). It's interesting because I still feel that Kat's character from the movie wrestles internally with many of the issues of "feminism" and supporting this label that we have been discussing in class.

On a personal note, the last song ("Bad Boy" by Cascada) was pretty much the theme song of my high school years for my friends and I. It was one of our go-to songs when silly high school boys had us emotionally distraught and we were sure we would never find "true love" (a message arguably instilled in us through society, such as these Disney movies where every girl is 14 and already ready to settle down with the man of their dreams).

Most interesting though, the second song, is one that is much less popular (to my knowledge at least). This song starts around 3:10 and I would love for people to compare the version that is used in the video with the link that I posted below. I'm not sure which song specifically is the one that is used in this video, but the one below was introduced to me in my Hip Hop Poetics class last semester. It is a South African rap song and both the song and the video portray this image of woman-objectivity and dependence on males. The video is kinda radical, so don't say I didn't warn you! But the two songs remind me of each other because of the "butterfly" and melody. Anyway, just something to compare and think about!!

  2. PS - I tried really hard to embed the video and make it super easy for you all to watch/compare but it just didn't wanna work for me (I'm not very computer savvy). Anyway, use the link that I posted above to hopefully get to the video on YouTube.....it's interesting, I promise!
